Mindset and Discipline
The most powerful thing we have is our mind, and with that our mindset. Luckily, our minds are trainable through discipline. Discipline is one of the best ways to test yourself and build the mindset and lifestyle you want. Through discipline you gain freedom. With that being said, it is up to you to shape your mindset and your life the way you want it.
“Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you respond to it.”
I’ll be the first to admit, I fail with discipline sometimes, I’m not perfect. But I try my hardest to stick to my plans with whatever it is I am trying to achieve. My hardest struggle is eating healthy. Man do I have a sweet tooth. But for the most part I avoid candy and sweets and try to replace it with some cashews or almonds. It’s about trying to find what works for you.
Comfort is a fine balance, in some aspects you should seek to be comfortable, such as finances. My biggest and most important goal is to ensure my family is comfortable.
I think one big part of being a man is doing things that make you uncomfortable and to ensure you don’t seek comfort. Comfort is the killer of all great men that were never great. A lot of things you think might suck, really aren’t that bad. For me, the thing I dislike is running, but I make sure I get out and run four or five times a week. I usually dread having to do it, and am miserable while running, but once my run is done, I am extremely happy I did it.
Another super simple example I can give of this is when my house is freezing when I wake up I make sure I don’t get warm clothes on. I do my morning routine before I get dressed for work. It might seem like something super simple or maybe even stupid, but I know if I get comfortable I will want to procrastinate and then probably stay on my phone. Plus now whenever I get caught outside in bad weather at work or on a hike, it doesn’t suck as bad.
You should seek discipline. This can be in the form of going to the gym and sticking to a strict diet (which we should all be doing), or maybe in ensuring you form good habits such as using your phone less, spending time outside, and being more present with your family. However you do this doesn’t matter, just make sure it gets done.
You need to be brutally honest with yourself and make sure you own it when you falter. If you can’t call yourself out on your own bullshit, who will?
Be consistent with yourself spiritually. Acknowledge you suck, but give yourself grace for sucking. - @incisive_savage
Looking for where to start? Try some of these:
Fitness- Go to the gym and work out at least five times a week (two non-consecutive days off), and run at least four. Find a diet that aligns with your goals and stick to it. Track your progress and try to see how long you can keep it up. If you miss two consecutive days, your streak must restart. (We should all be doing this.)
Finances- Keep track of ALL spending and where every penny goes. Try to go a day, then week, then month without spending money that wasn’t budgeted for. Zero impulse purchases.
Cleanliness- Make a mess, dirty a dish, or change your clothes? Clean it, put it in the dirty clothes basket, or whatever you need to do to return your space to its original space. You’d be surprised how many people have dirty homes and spaces, I’m guilty of this too occasionally.
Produce more than you consume- If you’re more of a creative type, put out more content than you consume. Whether that be videos, pictures, articles or a mix of media, get out there and create.
